I always seem to find curious “new” goodies at the store, but I never know what to do with them.
I’ve heard a lot about “blood oranges,” so I finally decided to try this recipe for “Blood Orange Lemon Bars” from White on Rice Couple. Essentially, these are lemon bars, but with orange filling. You can pin the recipe here.
I can be fairly finicky when it comes to orange-flavored-anything. I’m not entirely surprised that I didn’t especially enjoy these bars. They didn’t taste “bad,” exactly: the custard filling just tasted too much like an orange cream candy for my liking.
Another letdown with this recipe was the color of the filling. Compare these two pictures…
The color of the original bars persuaded me to give this pin a go, despite knowing I might not enjoy the flavor. Unfortunately, the blood oranges available in North Dakota don’t seem to be quite as colorful as their Californian cousins. Judging by the comments on the original post (which, unfortunately, I didn’t read immediately) others had a similar problem. Some suggested adding food coloring, but I was hoping for that beautiful, natural, red color.
One up-side to this pin was the brown-butter crust. I thought it was amazing, and I would consider making it to go with a different type of filling, or solo.
Have you had a similar encounter with a colorful recipe, only to have less than sparkling results? Do you think I’m being too harsh on the orange flavor? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!
